How Confident are you?

How Confident are you?

As a Confidence Coach you can appreciate that I regularly hear people saying “I‘m just not a confident person” or “I have always had low self-confidence issues“. As it is my job to help them I have the skills and experience necessary, however as a manager or an employer it maybe something you’ve never had to cope with before. It can be quite daunting to know how to help an employee who says they lack confidence or one who you recognise has low self-confidence.

Some managers may try to share their own experiences or advice and others may recommend  self help books. Whatever your approach, an important first step is to help the individual understand and clarify when and how they lack confidence. The statements at the start of the blog are very general and just because someone feels lacking in confidence in one situation does’t mean that their confidence levels are always low.

As a starting point to help them identify their personal confidence issues you could share the following activities:

  1. Suggest they keep a journal for a week and write down all the situations where they feel lacking in confidence
  2. They should then score each situation as to how strongly they felt from 0 to 10 (0 means no confidence and 10 means very confident)
  3. For each situation they should write down what they could have said or done that would have made them feel stronger
  4. At the end of the week they can review their journal and identify if there is a pattern to the situations that result in them lacking confidence
  5. They can repeat the exercise until they have a clear understanding of the situations and triggers for their low confidence

As a result they can make more specific statements such as “I’m not confident in x situations” or “I lack confidence when I have to ….”. Which gives them clarity on what they need to focus on to build their confidence.
